This site is located east of Durango in a Pinon, Ponderosa, Juniper and Oak woodland. Both fire and flooding have become more frequent due to pine beetle and other natural causes. Water comes only twice a year: as snow in the winter and rain in the summer. The site is particularly dry so water catchment and recycling were crucial. The residence is an earthship dug partially into the base of a hill and relies entirely on passive solar, PV, wood fire and water catchment. Some of the goals for the site were to: 1) divert flood waters away from the house and capture it in swales 2) recycle greywater 3) remove fire hazards 4) mulch the orchard for water retention 5) plant appropriate species in strategic locations for erosion control and restoration.
